The incidental music Edvard Grieg composed for Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt (1867) stands, along with his Holberg Suite and Piano Concerto, among his most universally popular orchestral works. By common consent, the music itself achieved far more for Ibsen 's vast and bewildering dramatic poem than any mere stage performance alone could have done, and therein lies a problem.

Alltså började jag läsa med stor nyfikenhet  I don’t know the Aeon label, but it had a clever idea with Ibsen’s fantastical play, Peer Gynt—it took the same performance of Grieg’s complete incidental music and interleaved it with Ibsen’s play in three abridged versions, in English, German, or French, depending on the market for the recording. Peer Gynt (/ pɪər ˈɡɪnt /, Norwegian: [ˈpeːr ˈɡʏnt]) is a five- act play in verse by the Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen published in 1867. Written in Danish —the common written language of Denmark and Norway in Ibsen's lifetime—it is one of the most widely performed Norwegian plays. Henrik Ibsen’s Peer Gynt was released in 1867, but was first seen on stage nine years later, at Christiania Theater. Since then, there has been many different versions of the play, in all major parts of the world. Peer Gynt is still one of the most famous plays in the world.
